Welcome to the Pnyx
Stand on the hill where Athenians gathered to debate, vote and govern their city.
Transcript
You saw the Acropolis. Now discover the hill that may change how you see Athens. Only about twenty minutes away, and free to visit, the Pnyx was where Athenian citizens gathered to debate the questions that shaped their city, persuade one another and make decisions together. The Athenians invented democracy. Here, they practised it - face to face, in public, as citizens. This was a city with extraordinary confidence in what human beings could do together. For generations, Athenians came here to decide what their city would do - and what kind of city it would become. The Pnyx is quiet today. But once you know what happened here, the place begins to feel very different. And so does Athens.
